I need your help

I took Randy to IKEA to get/look at the desk and he had some good points as to why we shouldn't get it. For one, it was pine and my finger nail dented it. For two, he didn't think it was all that great of quality. (hello it is from IKEA, I am thinking they are not top of the line!)

So I didn't get it. I didn't get the bookcase either. I don't know what i want to do now.

So here is where your help comes in. Where do you buy furniture. I SERIOUSLY need ideas, websites, and general help. Don't be shy, comment away. Now we are talking about furniture. I realize I surely need help in many other areas, but stick to the furniture/desks right now.

(oh and we went to look at the furniture store in town, the biggest one, and they were just really hard to deal with. They seem so pushy since they work on commission.)

Irk. I had a comment and got an error. We have some IKEA pieces (you have to be selective though), we have some from COpenhagen (same style as IKEA - better quality and a little more expensive), we also have a desk and some living room tables from Cost Plus world market which have held up great in the moves.

I thought Randy made your furniture. Didn't he make you some beautiful shelves or a bookcase in NC? I know he has the tools! Most of our furniture is hand-me-down. We've also bought some unfinished from Lowe's or an unfinished furniture place and then finished it ourselves. We did get some at IKEA here. If the price is right, and the style but just not the finish, why not get the pine desk and then add a coat or 4 of poly to it?

Ummm. Furniture buying? What is that. My husband does not allow such pursuits!

What kind of style are you looking for?? And how long does it have to last?

Tried any antique shops?

andrea, I have never heard of COpennhagen. I was super sold on the desk, I don't by any means need the top of the line, but with as easy as it was to dent with my finger nail, I am thinking it will be no match for a 3 and 5 year olds! Oh well, I am going to check out the other places you wrote. THanks for the info.

Joanna, oh yes, he can make it, but I would really like it before the girls go to college and I haven't gotten anything like that since NC.

Katie, it is coming. second year has kicked in. Maybe by third year pay?? I can always remain optimistic when I am not in the senario!!

I like a lot of the stuff Target sells, when I'm looking for bookshelf-type stuff. But Paul says it's a bi...I mean PAIN to put together.

I've been scouting for the perfect office / den desk too. Like you, I don't need top of the line, but being able to press your fingernails into the "wood" is a giant red flag! I'll be interested in your other readers suggestions also.

(BTW: I've been a little leary to buy online without feeling the quailty firsthand. Although plenty of pieces from Target have made me swoon!)

Our desk is made by Stanley Furniture company. I bought it in NC, but they do have their own web site and have quite a few styles. I love the quality, it made it all the way to TX from NC, thru AK and CA.

Since moving here, we live 10 minutes away from a Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, Pier 1, Bombay, etc. OUTLETS! Let me tell you, you can get some swinging deals! Do you have furniture outlets in your vicinity?
