I need help! (I know, what's new right?)

Anyway, I need help. Remember this post about the costumes? Well, I had the morning to myself and I went to Joann fabrics to get the fabric so I could possible start them before October. (wow what a sentence, hopefully Madison won't need help in English!) I couldn't find any fabric that will work for the overlay(the leg part of the costume and the top). It is called sheer knits. Does anyone have any suggestions? There are two places down by Renee that she will direct me too, but what if i can't find it there? I looked on Hancock fabrics, but I find their websites to be very confusing. If you look closely at the picture, it reminds me of (kind of now) chenille. It has those textured lines in it, but it is WAY more loose than that. Chenille is very specific in its pattern. just not right. Does anyone have any ideas? Also, there is 50g butterfly yarn. Does any one know what that is or where I can get it in a green and teal?

I looked up the pattern at www.patternreview.com and found 2 reviews of it. I looked at one and this is what she said about the fabric she used:
"I used a light green flannel-backed, poly satin for the fashion fabric and lining. The flannel fabric was from JoAnn's and has been in my stash for a few years. I used a sheer knit, sparkly green scale fabric for the overlay. it was a JoAnn's costume fabric"

http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/readreview.pl?readreview=1&reviewnum=16364 That's the url for the whole review.

I don't know of other local stores for you - you should be able to show someone in the store the pattern and have them help you find the right fabric, hopefully. I have bought fabric online from fabric.com and a couple other places that I can't remember right now. I looked at fabric.com and didn't see anything specifically labelled 'sheer knit'. I would think JoAnn's would have costume fabrics on a special shelf by now and it wouldn't be too hard to find.

I've never heard of butterfly yarn. Here's another quote from that review:
"Because I was using an overlay material that looked like shiney scales in the first place, I did not embellish that part of the garment as much as the pattern suggests. The pattern uses a matte sheer overlay, and then embellishes with butterfly yarn and sequin discs."

So maybe depending on the sheer knit you find you won't need it.

I hope that's a little helpful! If you go to patternreview to search for the pattern yourself and see the other review you just type the pattern number (4043) into the pattern search box in the upper left of the screen. I'll be quiet now.

50g is just the weight of the yarn. Butterfly yarn is just a fancy lightweight yarn. Just google it and you will see pictures of it.

Oh man, I will be NO help to you in this category. I've never even been on a fabric website before in my life! My mom wants to purchase me a nice sewing machine for Christmas, and I'm highly considering giving the good ahead for her to do so. WIth all the fun stuff and I see and hear you and Joanna doing, how could I not....it looks like fun!

The green one looks like they may have even used a crushed panne fabric. That would work well. I never get specifically what they suggest, I always go and search for what I think would look best. But just be careful to always use stretch when they call for a stretch, or vice versa. I speak from experience. :O

Unfortunately their costume fabric always comes out later than I want to wait to make costumes. I am like you, I like to get started now. They will have it out at the beginning of October probably.

Butterfly yarn is just a fancy yarn. You can use any kind you like. Good luck! This is one of the patterns Alex is deciding between still. I'm hoping she picks it, I love the mermaids!!! I bought it last year when they had a $1 sale and was hoping to use it this year!!!
