The Pillars of the Earth

Have y'all heard of this book? If you are any kind of Oprah fan, I am sure you have. I actually tend to stay away from Oprah's book selection. It kind of makes me feel that if I choose to read one of the books she endorses, I have somehow just jumped on some bandwagon. I know it is silly to think that, because she really does pick out good books. Anyway, back to Pillars. I was looking for a book to read and thought to ask Katie. She is a diligent reader and figured she would have a good recommendation that would broaden my reading list as well as maybe the book on hand so I wouldn't have to get it from the library or go to Barnes and Noble and buy it. Katie recommended The Pillars of the Earth. After looking she couldn't find it. Then in January, she bought it for me for my birthday. I was very excited to start reading it. Of course when I looked at the over 900 pages of small print I immediately put it back down! After about 2 weeks of looking at it I picked it up and decided to give it a try.... HOLY SNIKEY! I am hooked! I am only about 200 pages in but I am loving it. I have an art background and am intrigued by the look of cathedrals (although in college I remember hating looking so many cathedrals) It has made such a difference in my working out also. I have only a select few machines I can use and still read, but I can rip through 45 minutes and not be bored. I fear it will take me all year to read it, but if you get a chance, you should really check it out. Oprah is right. It is quite a book. (of course I am still trying to figure out how she read it in the short amount of time she sets forth to read it, she is a very busy woman and it is a very long book.

I LOVED this book. I was skeptical after the 70 year old man in line at Costco told me how great it was, but i absolutely adored this book. It was our book club book last month and many people were discouraged by the length. I can't wait to pick up his next one.

I read it back in 1999 and loved it. I have the next one, but I'm only a few chapters in, and it's a hard back, so too hard to take along.
